Nearly ten years ago, Ruth offered to become a spokesperson for our cause, and since that time, she has worked with WDIV Channel 4 staff to produce several donor awareness PSAs to promote donation. The first PSA featured Ruth with her daughter, Amy, and husband, Jerry, in their own home talking about the importance of discussing donation with your family members, while showcasing her own family's committment to organ and tissue donation.
Steve Kandt, while waiting for a lung transplant, saw this PSA and felt compelled to contact Ruth Spencer to thank her and her family for promoting the critical need for more donors. Steve shared with Ruth that he was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis when he was just two months old. Steve's lungs were okay until just a few years ago, when they deteriorated to the point of needing a lung transplant. Thus Steve became the inspiration for a second PSA.
