Mary Catherine Siers

Mary Catherine Siers,
living kidney recipient

Mary Catherine is a resident of Saginaw township and has made it her mission to educate others on the vital importance of organ and tissue donation since she herself received her kidney transplant in March 2000. Siers had diabetes for more than 30 years and discovered that she needed a new kidney in March 2000. Fellow Saginaw resident, Susan Berghoff, learned of Siers' plight during a church retreat and offered to give Siers one of her own.

Shortly after her successful transplant, Siers felt the need to give back to her community and began volunteering with Gift of Life Michigan. She has participated in many public presentations about donation and works tirelessly to continue to educate others in her community about the importance of signing up to become a donor on the Donor Registry.

Secretary Land bestowed Siers with a Shining Star award in a surprise ceremony at the Saginaw Secretary of State office. Even after Siers' accepted the award, she attributed much of it to others. "This is something that has to be shared," she says. "The heroes are the donors," she said. Indeed, Mary Catherine is a Shining Star.
