Revised Uniform Anatomical Gift Law [UAGL] HB 4940 - 4945
Six bills, which completely revise the Uniform Anatomical Gift Law in Michigan, were recently introduced. The package of bills clarifies and defines all aspects of the donation process while strengthening donor rights. Gift of Life Michigan fully supports HB 4940 and supporting bills, HB 4941 - 4945.

Living Donor Tax Benefit to Cover Unreimbursed Expenses Related to
DonationSenate Bill 76

This bill would allow living donors, in the year of donation, to subtract up to $10,000 from their Adjusted Gross Income (AGI) for expenses not reimbursed by insurance related to the donation. This bill applies to organ and bone marrow donation.

Permit 16-year-olds to become blood donors with parental permission Senate Bill 486

Sponsor: Senator Wayne Kuipers (R-Holland)

Allows an individual who is 16 years of age to donate blood in a voluntary and noncompensatory blood program with his or her parent's or legal guardian's permission or authorization. To be referenced as “Jenna’s law”.

Charlie W. Norwood Living Organ Donation Act S. 487 / H.R. 710

Sponsor: Congressman Charles Norwood (GA) and Senator Carl Levin (MI)

This bill proposes to amend the National Organ Transplant Act to clarify that paired kidney donation does not involve the transfer of a human organ for valuable consideration. The House bill has been named in honor of Representative Norwood, who passed away in February 2007.

The William H Frist Gift of Life Congressional Medal Act H.R. 1764

Establishes a congressional commemorative medal for organ donors and their families.

Living Organ Donor Tax Credit Act of 2007 H.R. 1035

Sponsor: Congressman Joe Wilson (SC)

Amends the Internal Revenue Code to allow a nonrefundable tax credit for a living donation of a qualified life-saving organ for transplantation. The act limits the credit to $5,000 of the unreimbursed costs and lost wages incurred by an organ donor in connection with an organ transplant.
